Box-Death Hollow Wilderness

The Box-Death Hollow Wilderness Area is located in the Dixie National Forest in the State of Utah. A favorite recreation destination for those seeking an outdoor excursion like no other, this park offers the sightseer vast canyons to admire, mesas, and plateaus. A variety of different plant life is also a major attraction at the park.

Utah has a lot to offer when it comes to natural wonders, and the Box-Death Hollow Wilderness area is no exception. Come here to explore the landscape, the major feature of which includes the canyons carved out of beautiful gray-orange crossbedded Navajo sandstone. The exposed bedrock consists mostly of sandstone and limestone.

To get to the park, travel north of the town of Escalante in the south-central part of Utah to the Dixie National Forest. Access the trailhead at Pine Creek from the Blue Spruce Campground, and Death Hollow from the Hell's Backbone Bridge, off Forest Road 153.

Two separate canyon tributaries of the Escalante River divide the park into two sections. The section of the wilderness referred to as "The Box" is a steep monocline divided by Pine Creek going in a north-south direction. To the east is the location of a gentler monocline that leads to the Death Hollow Creek.

Recreation activities include backpacking, hiking, and fishing. If you want to hike through the wilderness, you'll have to pass through the Phipps-Death Hollow Outstanding Natural Area, adjacent to the park – be mindful that there are no developed trails, and you may have to wade or swim through water at several points along the way.
