Mossy Cave
Mossy Cave (Bryce Canyon, Utah) consists of more that just a common old cave, but a popular trail, covering some nine miles. It is most appealing to families because of its safe route and easy gradients. However, caution should be taken during the summer months due to the searing temperatures.
The overpowering temperatures during Bryce Canyon National Park's (Utah) summer, does not scare away eager families from visiting Mossy Cave and its nearby trail. It is any easy hike that even a young child could manage with enough water.
Mossy Cave Trail covers some nine miles of gentle undulation, taking about an hour to complete. Elevations are mainly consistent, and the trail is soft to the feet with a firm, but sandy base. However, like any of the canyon's trails, dehydration is one of the biggest dangers. In fact, the best time to visit Mossy Cave is from mid-spring to mid-autumn.
The most alluring attraction by far is the secret that the trail hides. Kids delight in finding a natural bridge to cross before the trail winds like as snake, backwards and forwards, finally leading to the Mossy Cave Grotto. This cave is a fine example of the many alcoves that dot the park. Water drips gently, providing the perfect home for local mosses that line its ceilings. Summers are dry, and winters produce amazing icicles of all sizes.
Mossy's trail finally leads to a secluded waterfall. It is a good place to cool off and rest. Most interesting though is the natural rock window, located just above the waterline.
