Horse Pack Trips

Southern Utah is a wonderful location for horse pack trips and rides throughout its various parks, canyons and other regions. Tourists get a chance to enjoy the pleasures of guided trips on horses that they soon wish they could take home with them. In fact, the many ranches and tour companies across the area provide such services.

For wonderful horse pack trips and other types of horse rides, the southern part of the state of Utah, is truly a treasure waiting to be explored. Visitors come from across the state and beyond to enjoy these simple moments, to be at one with nature and get a guided tour on horseback.

During the summertime, riders can ascend the slopes of Dixie National Forest's Boulder Mountain. Rides traipse through forested plateaus, and may even include visits to Canyonlands, the Escalante Grand Staircase and the Capitol Reef. Everyone is rewarded with sensational views that in some cases go well beyond state lines.

Most tour companies include meals on day or longer trips. Overnight excursions include backcountry and campground camping, full meals and all equipment. Riders are taught to care for their horses, as well as get the chance to build a bond with these highly intelligent animals. In fact, before departure, riders are assigned horses that suit their riding experience. However, newbies are generally given shorter rides or offered some lessons prior to engaging on a trail ride.

Most tour companies also offer more extensive trips for those who love horse packing and have the experience to handle mountainous and more difficult terrain. Children are also welcome as long as they are experienced enough to ride safely.

Prices vary according to the companies and trips. Private rides are permitted, but a large deposit is required ahead of time, and any backcountry camping will require a permit, especially in the nearby national parks.
