Photography / Photo Tours

Cedar City, Utah, is one of those wonderful locations where no sane person would go visiting without a camera and snapping some memorable photos or picking up at least some typical touristy pictures. In fact, the city attracts a lot of travel photographers who make photography their bread and butter, helping to promote what most consider to be one of the cultural hubs in the state.

When it comes to culture and festivals, Utah's Cedar City has it all. The famous Shakespeare Festival attracts the majority of visitors, and most especially those wanting another set of colorful photos of this amazing event. However, even if photography is not something every traveler is capable of doing, the many gift shops have an array of excellent pictures, just waiting to be framed or even sent as postcards.

There are many opportunities to take either amateur or professional photos of the city and surrounding attractions. The die hard few will battle it out with a manual SLR and high powered lenses, whereas others opt for the simpler digital compact variety. Whichever one chooses, the selection of shots is as endless as the imagination – weather conditions vary, people come and go, and everything is in constant flux. No two photographs will ever be the same.

With many places to shoot a picture, the best start is at the festivals or local attractions. Cedar Breaks is not far afield and has incredibly intense multi-colored striped rocks. Brian Head has trails filled with scenic mountains, wildlife and wondrous fauna. The Kolob Canyons offer deep and unique crevices and narrower canyon views. Iron Mission State Park has a museum and great collection of Indian/pioneering artifacts, as well as mining exhibits. The Parowan Gap offers unique ancient American native art, painted directly onto the rock face. Highways 148 and 14 also have varied look out view points will unique and stunning landscapes. However, downtown Cedar City is riddled with history. Quaint stores, restaurants, art galleries, coffee houses, music venues, soda fountains, arts and craft stores, antique stores and the Cedar City Heritage Theatre are worth considering. In fact, the list of photography options is neverending, and thankfully, many camera and film development stores are there to assist every type of photographer. Even local hotels have computer access, allowing digital editing for the real enthusiasts.
