Swimming

Everyone enjoys swimming in pools, lakes and rivers. Cedar City (Utah) has a few city pools, but not far afield, local monuments and parks have lakes and rivers, some of which are safe enough for a quick and safe dip. However, caution has to be taken as some rivers have underlying currents and some lakes are not as clean as they may appear.

Cedar City, Utah, is a good place for swimming. Local pools, rivers and lakes are all great locations, in and not far from the city. Favorite hot spots include the Great Salt Lake, Utah Lake, Deer Creek, the Piute Reservoir and Yube Lake. Most national parks and monuments have rivers, but the majority of them are not good for swimming. Most visitor centers are very helpful in guiding visitors to appropriate spots.

The city center has three main pools. Two are currently being renovated and are closed until at least May 2007. However, the other one if centralized and provides safe family fun, as well as other fitness facilities for a minimal charge. Most hotels, motels and campgrounds usually have their own pools, too.

Swimming in local rivers is not recommended. There have been a lot of problems with contaminants, water born bacterium and even outbreaks of certain parasites, which are usually dependant on varied weather and other conditions that are natural in nature. However, it is best to check with local park, monument and city ranger/visitor centers for further information.

There are five main hot spots that are ideal for swimming, including lakes and a reservoir. The Great Salt Lake is probably the most famous. It is a fair drive from Cedar City, but even if one cannot swim, floating is simple because of the high salt content in the water. Utah Lake is east of the city and offers exceptional swimming facilities, including lifeguards during the summer. Deer Creek State Park has varied lakes and some rivers that are excellent for swimming, but again river conditions do vary. The Piute Reservoir is located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and considered one of the most attractive, as well as popular swimming spots in the state. Finally, Yuba Lake State Park has perfect swimming beaches on its eastern side, along with lifeguards and complete amenities as one would expect at any coastal beach.
